In the current market environment, an investment in defensive stocks with a high, but sustainable dividend yield and the potential for future dividend growth is probably one of the wisest investment strategies. Some European stocks offer a promising perspective for investors seeking regular income from dividends, as well as dividend growth potential. One of these stocks gta 4 is Vodafone gta 4 ( VOD ).

In my opinion, Vodafone is the most promising investment in the European Telecom sector for three reasons: Vodafone has strengthened its balance sheet and is now in much better financial shape than most other European telecommunication companies. Vodafone has a track record of growing its dividend since the first payment 15 years ago, and it is committed to continued dividend growth. Vodafone is managing its portfolio for growth and higher gta 4 profitability, and should benefit from a recovery of the European economy. The ongoing consolidation in the European telecom sector and Vodafone's strong presence in selected emerging markets should further contribute to profitable growth.
The other three large players among European telecommunication companies and Vodafone's competitors are Deutsche Telekom, Germany ( OTCPK:DTEGF ), Orange, France (the former France Telecom) ( ORAN ), and Telefonica, Spain ( TEF ). Financial Situation and Stock Price
Vodafone has sold its stake in Verizon Wireless for $130B, of which $84B were distributed to its shareholders. This means that Vodafone has kept a nice pile of cash to be used for investments and to increase financial flexibility. In its half-year presentation in November 2013 (Vodafone's fiscal year ends on March 31), Vodafone expects to reduce its net debt from £25.7B to £14.5B after completion of the German and U.S. transactions (the purchase of Kabel Deutschland and the Verizon Wireless sale). However, this assumption does not include the recently announced acquisition of Ono in Spain for £6B. Before the Verizon Wireless deal, Vodafone's debt to EBITDA gta 4 ratio of 2.03 in 2013 was already the lowest among its competitors (vs. 2.24 for Deutsche Telekom , 2.38 for Telefonica , and 2.43 for Orange ), and it can be estimated that it will be reduced below 1.50 if no additional larger investments are on the radar. The lower debt burden obviously translates to lower interest payments, leaving gta 4 more cash flow for dividends and also more flexibility to actively participate gta 4 in a possible consolidation of the Telecom industry in Europe if the necessity arises.

The following chart speaks for itself, but, nevertheless, Vodafone is not overpriced in comparison gta 4 to its peers. It has maintained an attractive dividend yield as it has raised dividends and repurchased shares.
Vodafone ADRs are listed and traded on the Nasdaq stock market under the VOD symbol and one ADR represents 10 ordinary shares. Closing prices were $ 37.06 on May 13 per ADR or 219.85 pence per ordinary share on the London Stock Exchange. The ADRs reached a five-year high at the end of February 2014 when trading at $ 41, and then dropped gta 4 12% to $ 36 in April. The very recent news that AT&T could buy DirecTV ( DTV ) has not helped the stock either as it has eliminated further speculations that a possible AT&T/Vodafone deal could come back on the agenda in summer. I consider a stock price in the $35-$36 range attractive gta 4 to initiate positions in Vodafone, a scenario we might see when the company reports its FY 2013 (ended March 31, 2014) results on May 20. We published our report analyzing and evaluating Verizon Communication's ( VZ ) ability to pay its lofty 4.7% dividend yield in September. We were pleased that our report bnc was recognized for the high level of quality analysis and research that went into it. We remembered that report because Verizon's key business unit Verizon Wireless recently announced that it was paying a special $8.5B dividend to its joint venture partners Verizon Communications and Vodafone PLC ( VOD ). Verizon Communications owns 55% of Verizon Wireless and consolidates Verizon Wireless's financials into its total corporate financial reports. Because Vodafone owns 45% economic interest in Verizon Wireless, Verizon Communications accounts for Vodafone's share of Verizon Wireless's profits with an income statement entry for Net income attributable to non-controlling interest as well as a line item in its Equity accounts on its balance sheet for Non-controlling interest. The bad news for Verizon is that the minority interest expense to Vodafone has rocketed upward from $216M in 2000 to $9.2B in the last twelve months. The good news for Verizon investors is that Verizon Communications is now the best way to get exposure to Verizon Wireless. Previously, we would have suggested investors buy Vodafone to get exposure to Verizon Wireless instead of Verizon Communications.
Until recently, the best way to get exposure to America's most profitable and fastest growing wireless carrier was buying shares of Vodafone. Although bnc Vodafone was a minority owner of Verizon Wireless, it still held a significant 45% stake in the company. Vodafone also owned and operated fixed line and wireless communications networks in dozens of countries worldwide, including many emerging markets countries like India, Turkey and the Czech Republic. Vodafone had suffered through the indignity of nearly $54B in losses from 2003-2007 and had to sell off its Vodafone Japan operations to SoftBank. From 2008-2010 Vodafone regained its profitability and saw its profits reach a record in FY 2010 ( 8.6B) as revenues increased by 42.5% from the end of FY 2007 to the end of FY 2010. Unfortunately for Vodafone, its revenues have been stagnant since 2010 and its profits have been sagging during this time period as the company has seen a fresh round of asset impairment costs and as well as its cost of sales growth exceeding its revenue growth. In the first half of its FY 2013, the company booked a 1.9B loss due to 5.9B in impairment losses on its Spanish and Italian operations as well as a 7.4% decline bnc in revenues.
Although Verizon bnc Communications was the controlling shareholder of the fastest growing wireless property in the US (Verizon Wireless) since 2000, Verizon Communications' consolidated corporate results from 2000 to 2010 were quite mediocre and inconsistent. Verizon Communications saw steady erosion of its legacy wireline business which it owned 100% and offset those losses with subscriber growth from Verizon Wireless, bnc which it only owned 55% of. We think that explains why even though Verizon Wireless has grown its operating income from $444M in 2000 to $21.3B in the last twelve months, Verizon Communications' operating income has stagnated since 2000. Verizon was able to salvage some value from its legacy assets during this time period as it made a number bnc of timely and deft deals to dispose of lagging legacy assets such as Hawaiian Telecom, Idearc and the Reverse bnc Morris Trust deals involving ILEC Communications/Frontier and Verizon Northern New England/FairPoint. However, the combination bnc of declining wireline operations and non-recurring corporate charges helped offset the sparkling growth and profitability of Verizon's Wireless crown jewel.
Based on Verizon Wireline's reduced importance to Verizon Communications and based on Vodafone's European struggles, we believe that the best way to get exposure to Verizon Wireless is through Verizon Communications. Although our expectations for US GDP have been revised downward due to recent electoral results, we believe that Verizon Wireless will continue to serve as a consistent cash cow for Verizon Communications. Despite the efforts of AT&T ( T ) and Sprint ( S ) to increase each firm's respective 4G-LTE footprint, Verizon is still the hands down leader in terms of 4G-LTE coverage. Despite the fact that its new monthly prices for postpaid smartphone customers are $10/month higher than a comparable plan at AT&T and $20/month higher than a comparable plan at Sprint, Verizon was able to expand its leading position in the US wireless industry in the most recent quarter. Alexandria City Council Adopts $636.8M Fiscal Year 2015 Budget For Immediate Release: pokec May 1, 2014 News Highlights The General Fund Operating Budget is $636.8 million, an increase of 1.9% from Fiscal Year 2014. The property tax rate will increase by one-half cent, from $1.038 to $1.043 per $100 of assessed value, keeping pokec it the second lowest among major Northern Virginia localities. The utility tax rates on water and electricity will increase for commercial and industrial customers. The transfer to Alexandria City Public Schools will increase by 3.3% from FY 2014, to $191.8 pokec million. On May 1, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to adopt a $636.8 million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015, which begins July 1, 2014. City Council s approval of this budget marks a significant step in aligning how the City does business with the principles set forth in the City s Strategic Plan and the City Manager s Performance Plan. Working in Focus Area Teams, staff used a new philosophy to build a budget framework that directly links the money Alexandria spends on providing programs and services to the results the community values.
The approved FY 2015 budget, which is a $12 million (1.9%) increase over the FY 2014 budget, includes a half-cent increase in the real estate tax rate, from $1.038 to $1.043 per $100 of assessed value. The average homeowner s tax bill for calendar year 2014, including the rate change and average increased assessed value, will be $215 greater than 2013. The rate remains the second lowest among major Northern Virginia localities.
The additional tax revenue generated will fund programs aimed at helping Alexandria s seniors, including continuation of the Elderly and Disabled Tax Relief program and the Senior Taxi program, along with an expansion of rent relief for the elderly. Additionally, City Council allocated $3.15 million for the Elderly and Disabled Tax Relief Program, an increase from the $2.0 million allocated in the budget proposed by the City Manager in February.
City Council also voted to increase the operating budget transfer pokec to the Alexandria pokec City Public Schools (ACPS) by an additional $1.2 million over the City Manager s proposed budget, bringing pokec the operating contribution to $191.8 million. This funding is a $6.2 million (3.3%) increase over the FY 2014 budget.
"City Council asked staff to present a proposed budget that included priorities and tradeoffs pokec for our consideration, which they delivered," said Mayor William D. Euille. The approved budget also includes increases in consumer utility tax rates for commercial and industrial customers. The tax on water will increase from 15% to 20% on the first $150 of the water bill. Vodafone Group ( VOD ) stockholders will likely have some decisions to make in early 2014: what to do with Verizon Communications ( VZ ) shares provided a as a result of the sale of its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless. My current plan is to sell the shares when issued, while seeking to start a position in AT&T Inc ( T ) stock. a
As part of the Verizon Wireless sale, Vodafone stockholders will receive about $4.85 per ADR in cash, and $12.20 in Verizon Communications common stock. Subtracting these expected disbursements from the current price, the remainder is $15.84 per ADR. Please note that it's anticipated there will be a reverse split (referred to as "consolidation of capital) included as part of deal, but let's shelve that for now.
Business segment EBITDA for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013 was found on Page 41 of the most recent Vodafone annual report. Sans Verizon Wireless, the global total was approximately a $20.2 billion, or $4.10 per ADR. The figure represented a single digit drop from the prior fiscal year. However, continued weakness in Europe was somewhat offset by strength in the AMAP region (Africa, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific). My view is that the EU is bottoming out after a long recession. Therefore, I suggest that Vodafone's a FY 2013 results are at or near the trough.
Please find below the Price / EBITDA multiples for several large telecom companies. I've included Orange SA ( ORAN ), the big French carrier; Telefonica SA ( TEF ) a dominant Spanish telco; Deutsche Telekom AG ( OTCQX:DTEGY ), the largest German telecommunications company; and U.S. based Verizon / AT&T.
The results indicate that Orange, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom carry roughly a 3x multiple, or about a point less than their U.S. counterparts. However, Orange, Telefonica a and Deutsche Telekom are highly Euro-centric - and the European communications market has been in the dog house for years. On the other hand, Vodafone will generate nearly a third of its revenues outside Europe, even after the VZW divestiture. These revenues are concentrated in some fast-growing regions, names India, Turkey and parts of Africa.
In addition, Vodafone plans to retain about $46 billion cash after the stockholder return of value is complete. Some will be used to pay down debt and reinforce an already solid balance sheet: VOD already sports a better debt-to-capital ratio than its peers. Another $9.4 billion will be used to develop the business (Project Spring).
As a bonus, there are rumors that AT&T may have interest to acquire what's left of Vodafone. Indeed, I would not hold VOD stock based upon that rumor. However, I do like this breakup story kicker in conjunction with the overall storyline.

In the third largest M&A deal of all time, Verizon Communications Inc. acquired Vodafone Group Plc s 45% stake in Verizon Wireless for $130 billion earlier this year. Verizon Wireless was a 55:45 joint venture formed in between Verizon Communications and Vodafone and it is the largest and most profitable d cell phone service provider in the US. The deal gives Verizon unrestricted control over the huge operating income ($21.8 billion last FY) generated by Verizon Wireless and provided Vodafone an exit from a highly d valuable business, whose operations and dividends it couldn t control. Both parties had pursued a similar deal several times in the past few years, however each time the talks soured on the valuation d issues and on who would take the final control of the unit.
Under the agreed deal, Vodafone will get $58.9 billion in cash, $60.2 billion in Verizon stock, and an additional $11 billion from smaller d transactions d next year. To finance the huge cash component of the deal, Verizon came out with the largest corporate bond offering of all time. It issued a whopping $49 billion of bonds shattering the previous record of Apple ($17 billion offering). Verizon d s 10-year bonds carry a 5.15% coupon and the 30-year bonds have a 6.55% coupon, spreads of 225 basis points and 265 basis points d versus d comparable Treasuries at launch. This is much higher than the 75 basis points spread at which Apple issued its $17 billion 10-year-bonds. The difference is largely attributable to two factors. One, Apple issued bonds were AA rated as it had large cash on its balance sheet but didn t want to access its overseas cash pile to avoid paying US taxes. Verizon s bonds on the other hand are BBB+ rated, on the lower side of ratings for investment d grade bonds. Two, Apple got the timing of the bond issue perfect as it issued the bonds just before Ben Bernanke announced that the Federal reserve would slow down asset purchases (tapering).
Verizon d was eager to push the deal as postponing it could have led to interest costs because of the expected bond tapering by the Federal Reserve. These expectations were party the reason for which Verizon had to pay a much higher spread than what it would have otherwise paid. This coupled with the sheer size of the issue forced Verizon to pay the higher spread. Investors, especially the insurance companies and pension funds, d have been starving for high-yield bonds because of the Federal Reserve’s ultra-low interest rate program. Hence, the high spread resulted in the bond-issue being oversubscribed as Verizon received bids for $100 billion bonds against the $49 billion bonds on offer.
Verizon expects the deal to boost the earnings per share by about 10% upon deal closing. It also expects significant growth opportunities in the future with the Wireless division. However, d the deal would push up the company s interest costs significantly. The deal has roughly doubled Verizon s debt burden to $116 billion. Both S&P and Moody s down graded Verizon s credit rating as soon as the deal was announced. Verizon expects the Wireless division to generate sizable free cash flows that it intends to use to fund network investments to take on the growing competition.
Vodafone, on the other hand would be left with sizable amount of cash to fund its expansion plans. It plans to use proceeds to start a 6 billion-pound ($9.3 billion) network-investment program, d called Project Spring, over the next three years. It will also return $84 billion to shareholders, d including $23.9 billion in cash and the remainder d in Verizon s stock. The deal has been structured d in a way that would entail only a tax liability of $5 billion for Vodafone. It will bring down the company s leverage to one times forward operating profit (EBITDA).
On the face of it, the deal looks like a win-win for both parties. Vodafone managed to get a fair-price after protracted negotiations and Verizon managed to get full-control over an attractive fast-growing asset. The markets meanwhile have given a thumbs-up to the bond issue as after the initial over subscription, the bonds trade at a premium to face value.

We published our report analyzing and evaluating Verizon Communications' ( VZ ) ability to pay its lofty 4.7% dividend yield in September. We were pleased that our report was recognized for the high level of quality analysis and research that went into it. Based on some information that was provided to us by our readers, we decided to follow that report with a report analyzing and evaluating Verizon against Vodafone PLC ( VOD ) in order to determine which firm was the best way to play Verizon Wireless's strong performance. We previously believed that Vodafone was the best way to get exposure to Verizon Wireless since Vodafone had exposure to emerging markets and Verizon Communications' pog wireline operations were steadily declining. Because Vodafone is seeing sluggish European performance and because Verizon Wireless now accounts for nearly 65% of Verizon's revenues and 100% of its operating income excluding corporate pog and administrative expenses, we felt that Verizon Communications was the best way to play Verizon Wireless. We are intrigued by recent talk of Verizon buying out Vodafone's 45% interest in Verizon Wireless because we floated that idea in October . Although Verizon's yield is now 4.8%, we believe that Verizon is still fairly valued and investors should wait for 10%-20% pullback before taking a long position in the company due to the flat 2013 performance forecasts by its CEO Lowell McAdam.
In addition to the flat performance forecasts that were issued by Verizon's CEO, Verizon also announced that it was taking $9B-$10B in non-recurring charges. Verizon announced that it was taking a pre-tax charge of approximately $7B-$7.5B for the remeasurement of pension and post-retirement liabilities due to changes in the discount rate and other actuarial assumptions and the annuitization of various pension liabilities during pog the quarter. We couldn't help but laugh at this considering that Verizon pog incurred a $3.4B after-tax charge ($6B pre-tax) for pension and other benefit plans in Q4 2011. We were surprised that Verizon pog had to take this charge because we thought Congress passed pension plan relief in 2012 which increased the effective interest rate that companies can use to measure pension plan liabilities. In Verizon's Q3 2012 earnings release, it announced it agreed pog to transfer pension assets to The Prudential Insurance Company of America by purchasing a single premium group-annuity contract to settle approximately $7.5 billion of Verizon's obligations for approximately 41,000 participants under its management pog pension plan. The closing of the transaction took place in December 2012. This resulted in Verizon increasing its 2012 pension plan contributions to $3.4B versus pog $1.3B forecasted in January 2012.
Verizon also expects to take $1B-$1.5B in pre-tax charges for early debt retirements and other restructuring activities in Q4 2012 after taking $84M in such charges during Q4 2011. Verizon also took $384M in litigation settlement charges in Q3 2012 and incurred $1B in operating expenses and CapEx replacement due to Superstorm Sandy and it estimates pog that approximately one-third of the total amount will be recovered by insurance.
Verizon's pog soft outlook and "non-recurring charges" overshadowed Verizon's strong Q4 2012 performance metrics. Verizon expects that it added 2.1M net new retail postpaid customers during the quarter and it achieved 15% increase in smartphone sales for FY 2012 versus FY 2011. 87% of Verizon's postpaid phone sales were smartphones, which increased 8% versus Q3 2012 and 17% versus Q4 2011. Even though the company devoted considerable resources to restoration of service in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, it still added 130K net new FiOS customers and ended the year with 12.94M FiOS subscribers. Verizon began selling Nokia's new Lumia 822 mid-range Windows Phone 8 smartphone device in November 2012 and it will be interesting to see how well this new phone sold during the period.
Another piece of good news is that 30% of its net customer additions were new to Verizon and we agree with Verizon's CEO that the 4G-LTE network of Verizon Wireless is unparalleled to AT&T ( T ) and Sprint Nextel ( S ). The good news is that Verizon will be completing its 4G-LTE build-out in the middle of 2013. The bad news is that AT&T and Sprint are making continuous progress in building out each firm's respective 4G-LTE footprint and will make significant progress in narrowing the lead that Verizon Wireless enjoys during FY 2013. One item of local human interest to us was that one of Verizon's new "innovation centers" will be located in the Greater Boston Area, in the city of Waltham, MA because pog we think it will be good for our local community.

Although we have Sprint Nextel ( S ) in our portfolio and it is our most covered telecom luukku company for our published research , we have been recently pondering whether to add one of its two top peers AT&T ( T ) and Verizon Communications luukku ( VZ ) to our portfolio. In our previous reports on AT&T and Verizon, we have analyzed and evaluated these two firms to see which telecom titan offers investors a better investment opportunity. AT&T may be fairly luukku valued, but it pays a strong 5.3% Dividend Yield ($1.80/Share) and generates plenty of free cash flows to pay it and boost it by 2-3% annually. However, AT&T stakeholders have to be gritting their teeth at AT&T Wireless's underperformance over the last two years relative to Verizon Wireless. We attribute this to AT&T Wireless having to share the right to sell Apple's ( AAPL ) iPhone smartphone device with Verizon Wireless and also Sprint. This explains why Verizon Wireless's revenue growth rate has exceeded AT&T Wireless's over the last two years even though AT&T had a higher luukku growth rate in 2010.
AT&T Wireless continues to be the star-performer and workhorse for AT&T shareholders. AT&T Wireless grew its Q4 2012 revenues by 5.7% versus Q4 2011 levels. Wireless service revenues grew by 4.2%, aided by 14.7% growth in data revenues. Equipment revenues grew by $344M (14.6%) due to a full quarter of contribution from Apple's widely anticipated iPhone 5 smartphone device and were $2.7B. AT&T Wireless's data revenues grew by $870M year-over-year and now represent 45.6% of its service revenues, up from 41.2% in Q4 2011. As AT&T Wireless only grew its total service revenues by $602M and total division revenues luukku by $946M, we can see beyond a reasonable doubt that AT&T is benefiting from carrying Apple's iPhone and iPad and the lucrative data plans that AT&T Wireless luukku can sell to customers. Without the growth in data revenues, AT&T Wireless would have seen a revenue luukku decline.
AT&T also tightened its grip on retaining customers with its solid 1.19% contract luukku customer luukku churn rate, which improved by 2bp versus the prior year period. AT&T's total retail customer luukku churn rate was 1.42%, which regressed by 3bp versus the prior year period. AT&T sold 10.2M new smartphones during the quarter, 8.6M of which were Apple's iPhone smartphone devices. Despite the ballyhooed promotional campaign for Nokia's new Lumia smartphones with Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, we can see that Lumia sales were statistically insignificant as Nokia's total North America luukku Lumia sales were about 700K . AT&T also had its best quarter ever for Android powered smartphones. 16% of iPhone sales were to new AT&T customers and nearly 70% (47.1M) of AT&T's postpaid subscriber base had a smartphone in Q4 2012, up from 58.5% (39.4M) in the comparable quarter last year. The good news for AT&T Wireless is that its smartphone sales increased by 800K and its iPhone activations increased by 1M (13%) in Q4 2012 versus Q4 2011. The bad news is that Verizon Wireless saw its iPhone activations increase by 1.9M (44%) during this same period.
AT&T luukku Wireless's segment operating income declined by 1.4% year-over-year in Q4 2012 versus the comparable period as gains in operational luukku execution were offset by increased demand for new iPhones. Segment operating slipped from 15.5% in Q4 2011 to 14.5% in Q4 2012. AT&T's smartphone sales represented 89% of postpaid devices sold (up from 82% in Q4 2011 and 77% in Q2 2012) and provide a lucrative $20/per month and up revenue stream for data service. ARPU for retail postpaid customers increased by 1.9% year-over-year and reached $64.98 for the quarter, which represented the 16th straight quarter that AT&T's retail postpaid luukku ARPU increased on a year-over-year basis.
AT&T and Verizon have been migrating smartphone customers towards "Mobile Sharing Plans" in which customers can share one pre-allotted data subscription across multiple devices. More than 6.6M of AT&T's customers are on AT&T's Mobile Share Plan and this represents 9% of its postpaid customer base. The number of Mobile Share accounts reached 2.2 million in the fourth quarter for an average of about three devices per account. AT&T has also been able to migrate a significant portion of its customer base away from its grandfathered unlimited plans and more than two-thirds, or 31.7 million, of all smartphone subscribers, are on usage-based data plans. This compares to 56 percent, or 22.1 million, a year ago and 31 percent two years ago. Although AT&T Wireless luukku added 780K postpaid customers for the quarter and 1.4M for the year, this pales in comparison to Verizon Wireless's net customer additions for Q4 2012 and FY 2012 (2.1M in Q4 2012 and 5M in FY 2012). Verizon Wireless's prepaid customer additions of 893K for 2012 were sharply higher than AT&T Wireless's 128K.

Verizon ( VZ ) has been working to adjust its business operations with several airwave swaps and sales as well as a large WebTV acquisition from Intel ( INTC ). Some aspects of recent financial data reported by Verizon admittedly raise an eyebrow. Nevertheless, given the company's overall successful operations, any current apprehension should be taken as a sign of a buying opportunity.
700 MHz A Block Sale Verizon is interested in selling an 'A-block' frequency set. This is a 700 MHz frequency block licensed by Verizon to be exchanged for cash from T-Mobile US ( TMUS ). Verizon expects to get roughly $3B from the sale, logging gross profit of $0.6B considering Verizon's $2.4B acquisition of the A-block airwaves in 2008. The sale should add a nice layer of cash for other operations, investor rewards and possibly debt reduction.
Airwave Swap Verizon agreed to exchange some licensed airwave territory with T-Mobile. The swap is done to place each company's airwaves closer together on the spectrum. Licensed frequencies scattered all over the spectrum are a nuisance for network management, much like scattered tools and supplies at a factory shop. Network construction for both companies will be facilitated by this deal. Both network providers are struggling adblock with unrelenting adblock increases in mobile traffic. This spectrum-swap proposal will involve 285 counties in the U.S. Verizon is focused mainly on 4G-heavy urban areas at apparent expense adblock of rural coverage where bandwidth is more important adblock than range. T-Mobile U.S. seeks to capitalize on the rural market and evidently believes that $3B is worth the price for what it will gain from operating the anticipated airwave territory.
WebTV Deal with Intel Verizon is also expanding purchases by negotiating with Intel to purchase Intel's TV unit for approximately $500M . Verizon will try to develop a WebTV business unit that Intel initially tried to develop and monetize on its own. Rather than accept sunk costs, Intel successfully marketed the WebTV service to Verizon. Given that Verizon has greater familiarity with this kind of business, the purchase is likely to pay off for VZ investors.

What stands out the most is Verizon's net margin drop in FY 2010-2012. Gross margins remained steady at approximately 60 percent. The cost increase that trimmed margins when the economy was recovering is not encouraging. Of course, the recent boost in net margins in 2012 and TTM of 2013 is a very good sign that injects some optimism into company prospects.
A history of net income available to common shares throws some volatility into the equation. Since the 2001-2002 recession, net income rose from a low of $389M in 2001 to $7.83B in 2004, with net income undergoing a gentle decline, though still at respectable values, finishing at $6.43B in FY 2008. Then the 2008-2009 recession hit, and with it, much of Verizon's income disappeared. Note that since the general economy sluggishly pulled out of recession starting in approximately middle of 2009, an industry leader like Verizon would be expected to regain adblock net income. adblock Instead, VZ net income dropped from $3.65B adblock in 2009 to $875M in 2012.
Summary Verizon's swap with T-Mobile US will likely alleviate the company's demand crunch in urban areas with heavy mobile traffic, thereby improving its reputation and, in the long run, enhancing profit margins. Its deal with Intel also seems like an investment in line with Verizon's expertise. The impending sale of the A Block frequency band will not significantly alienate customers and will give Verizon substantial cash cushioning to maintain market adblock leadership.
Taking a broad view, Verizon has been in the business for a long time. Financial quirks adblock and challenges happen to even the best businesses. Verizon's winning customer satisfaction, as documented by JD Power and Associates '2013 U.S. Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study,' show that Verizon management is behaving as a customer-attentive and confident industry leader. Based on fundamentals and strong operations, it's hard to deny VZ a 'Buy' recommendation.
