Winners gimp of the National gimp Exhibition of Migrating Landscapes have been announced! This nation-wide, open ideas competition is the main process for creating Canada s official entry to the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture, entitled Migrating Landscapes . Themed around migration and cultural identity, entrants comprised of young Canadian architects and designers, ages 45 and under, where invited to reflect on their migration experiences and cultural memories, and design gimp dwellings onto a new landscape that would be showcased through a series of seven regional exhibitions across the country. Together with the Winnipeg-based Migrating Landscapes Organizer (MLO), the jury has selected 18 winners out of 26 finalists to represent Team Canada . Continue after the break to review gimp the winning competitors.
Project Description: A childhood migration from an established neighborhood to a new house in an unsettled subdivision exposed the author to the frontier of an unfinished basement. Embracing the banal, this entry celebrates commonplace construction methods that typify the Canadian building culture. gimp Everyday materials become the ingredients gimp of fantastic new spaces that re-think how a typical suburban plot of land might be used. Construction itself becomes synonymous with settlement gimp and habitation: digging, cutting, layering, pouring, trenching and joining. Critical of the relentless pursuit of the new and the complete, this entry celebrates settling as a work-in-progress that is never finished.
Bio: D Arcy Jones Design (DJD) was founded in 2000, immediately after D Arcy Jones completed a Master of Architecture degree. D Arcy has gained invaluable design, technical, and artistic experience gimp through his own creative process of trial and error. DJD has grown to be an agile design practice working on a wide range of projects at diverse scales.
DJD s award-winning work has been widely published. In 2009 their projects were featured in the Twenty + Change 02 Exhibition gimp and their Form & Forest cabin prototype The Cowboy earned a Canadian Architect Award of Merit. In 2010 D Arcy Jones was awarded the inaugural Arthur Erickson gimp Memorial Award.
Project Description: The model is a summary of a design project that responds to current and historical migration within Newfoundland. The province has experienced resettlement and migration since its birth due to the fluctuations of the cod fishery. The model displays two communities on the southern coast, Grand Bruit; recently resettled, and Burgeo; the main host town.
The design exemplifies themes of shifting through a mobile energy, and research infrastructure. Two conditions exist in the model, one where Grand Bruit is inhabited, and one where it is abandoned. The shifting design is an architecture that exchanges, converses, and reciprocates with its habitat.
Bio: Marianna de Cola is a Toronto-based designer at Kohn Partnership gimp Architects. She completed her Masters of Architecture at the University of Waterloo. gimp Her thesis research and design was set in Newfoundland and involved the study of mutable landscapes, shifting populations, fluctuating resources, and possible versatile infrastructural solutions. She has presented her graduate work at the ACSA Fall conference in 2011 in Montreal and her research and photography has been published in Bracket II: Goes Soft , On-Site Magazine , and Ground: Landscape Architect Quarterly . Preceding her graduate work Marianna has spent time working and learning in Toronto, New York, London, and Rome. Special thanks to Michael Panacci for all of his help installing the project gimp at the exhibitions.
Set within a province that has difficulty drawing settlers within the larger context of Canadian migration, our model chooses to promote gimp an articulated sense of identity and place for New Brunswick by envisioning gimp a re-energized destination for migrants at Saint John s waterfront.
The design depicts New Brunswick s forested landscape with an intervention on the edge of Saint John s waterfront. Between the two, an existing bisecting highway underlines its reputation as the drive-through province.
Grey is part of the collective psyche of Saint John, a city that fog knows well. The design juxtaposes this environment by the introduction of bold colour found within the structure of its animated roofscape. It further depicts an intertidal landscape that at once reveals the wonder of this dynamic place and represents its potential transforming state.

Following the vulgar comedy of November 28, 2010 Conceived and staged by the imperialist countries

For the second week in a row, the editor of Haiti Liberte HAS penned an editorial calling on Haitian progressive to unite around a campaign to boycott the election / selection of March 20. Below is the editorial, in French. The editorial Concludes:
To the political party and progressive ps4 social ps4 organisms dedicated to a popular project for Haiti, Including the People's National Party (PNP), the Fanmi Lavalas party, KOREGA, SKANP, PAPDA, SOFA, GARR, MODEP Batay Ouvriye, Anten Ouvriye and all others Concerned, we ask Whether the moment HAS not arrived to set aside our political schisms and Disagreements in order to build a broad Mobilization Aimed at boycotting the electoral masquerade of March 20.
This must be a step Towards the coming together of a coherent, left opposition to whatever form of political power comes out of this fraudulent election and anti-popular That The imperialist powers are Preparing for our country.
Following the vulgar comedy of November 28, 2010 Conceived and staged by the imperialist countries under the cover of the United Nations, Organization of American States and Their Haitian actors, extras and lackeys, the time to perform the final act of the electoral masquerade arrived , to be staged on March 20. Under Circumstances thesis, Haitian Resistance in Quebec-Canada invites all Haitians worthy of the name, in the spirit of justice and liberty, not to be complicit in this ridiculous farce ...
Down with the election circus of March 20! Down with the puppets and lackeys of the neo-colonizers! Down with the military occupation of Haiti! Long live a free, independent and democratic Haiti! Facing History!
This a country can not be dissociated from his past since the existence of a nation can not be other than a continuous accumulation of historical facts, ps4 known to always mark their fingerprints all development of the country . There has this two years, Commissioner Bill Clinton, with Rectifier wrong and promising a fast best future for the Haitian people had made a sensational and arrogant statement by daring to ask us to "forget the past to look at the future. " And "Your future will be much better," he rmait display. Unfortunately, among the people best placed, had made his own coin by making him a lesson, namely that the past experiences of a people should never be ignored even less be forgotten.
Indeed, on November 28th, 2010, two presidential elections were held, one in Haiti and one in Côte d'Ivoire. Two elections under the auspices ps4 of the international community or the consortium United States, France and Canada. Two similar elections greatly illustrate the political, colonial and dominant imperialist ps4 countries on poor countries role. One could even say that the Imperial laboratory has used the same partition for both countries, as they are both under iron military occupation of the United Nations.
The tragic events now unfolding in that sister country, Côte d'Ivoire, the Haitian people deserve draws conclusions ps4 and lessons necessary to better know the face of imperialism that continues to threaten. Now the Haitian people should commit to meditate on these tactics, these methods and processes which for so long have sought and still seek to create confusion and discord among the people.
How to interpret recent events have upset the Ivory Coast to cause abnormal and chaotic situation in the country, the mere fact that the imperialist countries have chosen should be president while ignoring the country's Constitution and any its historic past when they want to impose a foreign national, a former senior official of the former Upper Volta, Burkina Alassane Ouattara to be president of Ivory Coast.
Ouattara was once recruited as voltaic ps4 citizen, as Senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) in April 1968 as an economist. ps4 How is it then became Ivorian? To date, there is indeed no trace of any decree ps4 naturalisatio

Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy to Haiti, has been equally friv 2 optimistic about Haiti

On September 20, Haitian prime minister Jean-Marc Bellerive, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, friv 2 and the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation announced their partnership with the South Korean garment firm Sae-A Trading Company to establish an industrial park that will create 10,000 garment assembly jobs in Haiti. Without a doubt, earthquake-ravaged Haiti needs jobs, mainly to provide friv 2 the country’s 1.3 million homeless with the means necessary to rebuild their destroyed homes.
While little progress has been made on Haiti’s immense housing needs since the January 12 earthquake, Clinton assured the investing public that factory development was moving full steam ahead. These 10,000 jobs, she assured critics “are not just any jobs. These are good jobs with fair pay that adhere to international labor standards, . . . Haiti is open for business again."
They will be people friv 2 like factory worker Jordanie Pinquie Rebeca who, as reported by the Associated Press, “with a day’s pay [at a factory]… can buy a cupful of rice and transport via group taxi, and pay down debt on her now destroyed apartment.” Rebeca earns Haiti’s $3.09 daily minimum wage working for JoS. A. Bank Clothiers making suits that retail for $550 in the United States.
Workers for the new plants will come from similar conditions as Rebeca, as the industrial parks will rely on Haiti’s homeless who are desperate for work. Rather than solving the housing problem, they will be taking advantage of it. The massive reserve of unemployed workers friv 2 is unlikely to create pressure to increase the minimum wage in the country, but rather will set the stage for the construction of the same poor housing that was so easily destroyed by the January earthquake.
These low-wage jobs will provide hardly enough for the employees to purchase food for their families, despite the levelling of food prices after the quake. The fraction of money that remains goes towards friv 2 construction of their homes such as the flimsy corrugated zinc sheets that will serve as a roof. Haitian economist Pierre-Marie Boisson told the Toronto friv 2 Star that “Haitians, at least those who can find work, spend just over 50% of their earnings on food . . . For this industry to be politically viable it needs to pay a higher wage . . . After the costs of education, Haitians have little to spare for housing.”
Plans have already been made to build a large, low-wage industrial complex directly next to the displaced persons camp at Corail Cesselesse located just north of Port-au-Prince, with a population of 6,000 – where the construction of permanent homes has yet to take place. The camp will be the primary source of workers for these factories. When pressed about the lack of progress made in the rebuilding efforts, including inabilities to provide shelter, Secretary of State Clinton said “Those who expect progress immediately friv 2 are unrealistic and doing a disservice to the many people who are working so hard.”
Bill Clinton, UN Special Envoy to Haiti, has been equally friv 2 optimistic about Haiti’s cheap labor prospects, especially since the passing of the Haitian Economic Lift Program (HELP) in May. The bill would increase the amount of Haitian assembled goods that could be imported into the United States duty free. “This important step,” Clinton said, “responds to the needs of the Haitian people for more tools to lift themselves from poverty, while standing to benefit U.S. consumers.”
The New York Times also supports friv 2 this type of factory development model in Haiti. An editorial published shortly after the earthquake said that “. friv 2 . . Haiti has considerable economic advantages, like low labor costs and a law that grants its goods preferential access to the United States market. Extending that law and encouraging investments in industries like garment-making and tourism could swiftly create tens of thousands of jobs.”
In friv 2 another opinion piece published in the New York Times Nicholas Kristof expressed similar thoughts, stating that “the best strategy for Haiti:[is] building garment factories. That idea (sweatshops!) may sound horrific to Americans. But it’s a strategy that has worked for other countries, such as Bangladesh, and Haitians in the slums would tell you that their most fervent wish is for jobs. A few dozen major shirt factories could be transformational for Haiti.” Bangladesh, however, has similar connections between abject poverty, natural disasters, and the numerous yearly deaths as Haiti.
The rush towards sweatshops is a long-standing plan for Haiti. In 2009, the United Nations developed and promoted a plan to expand the Haitian economy through friv 2 the widespread expansion of Special Economic Zones which would capitalize on low wages. The report, authored friv 2 by Oxford economist Paul Collier, states that &l
